The Synod of Bishops of the UGCC encourages all the faithful to experience the Sunday of the Word of God in a special way. In our Church, it is celebrated on the Sunday after Theophany, which this year falls on January 12, 2025. We offer you a resource for spiritual enrichment and reflection on the Holy Scriptures.

Bishop Mykhailo Kvyatkivskyi, Head of the UGCC Catechetical Commission, emphasized in his address on the Sunday of the Word of God:
“This day is a unique opportunity to remind ourselves that the Holy Scriptures are not just a book we read. It is the living and active Word through which the Lord speaks to each of us, guides us, and strengthens our faith.”
Additionally, according to the Head of the Patriarchal Catechetical Commission, this year’s observance of the Sunday of the Word of God is also an opportunity to enter worthily into the Jubilee Year of Hope by listening to, reflecting on, and being nourished by the Word of God. Therefore, the Catechetical Commission has proposed specific initiatives to rekindle love for the Holy Scriptures among the faithful.
One of the resources offered for deeper engagement with the Word of God, particularly the Gospel of Mark, is Lectio Divina: “The Gospel of Mark” from the series of prayerful readings for everyday life. It aims to guide readers (listeners) in their reading of the Holy Scriptures. These pages follow the classical method of lectio divina and are enriched with anthropological excerpts from the works of the Church Fathers and spiritual teachers.

Another resource for spiritual reading is Wilfrid J. Harrington OP’s “Reading Mark for the First Time.”
Furthermore, according to the Head of the Patriarchal Catechetical Commission, this year’s Sunday of the Word of God provides an opportunity to enter the Jubilee Year of Hope with dignity through listening to, reflecting on, and being nourished by God’s Word. For this reason, the Catechetical Commission has proposed specific initiatives aimed at reviving love for the Scriptures among the faithful.
Detailed proposals with audio, video, and text materials for parishes are already published on the websites of the UGCC and the Patriarchal Catechetical Commission.
